Energy Center Pittsburgh

Center of reliability and efficiency.

District Energy: Now's the TimeA proven solution can be as compelling as a new one. Case in point: Energy Center Pittsburgh – a system that has quietly and effectively become a trusted source of heating and cooling for city buildings. Initially, this took hold via our North Shore Plant, which has served some 30 buildings (6.3 million square feet) just north of Pittsburgh's downtown over 20 years. In 2018, our story will expand with the opening of a brand-new Uptown system.

One system. Many benefits.

From Energy Center Pittsburgh's strategically located plants around downtown, chilled water and steam is piped to buildings yielding numerous benefits for the customer

  • Reliability – a heating and cooling system every customer can count on with a reliability track record of 99.9999%
  • Efficiency – centralized plants serving many buildings is inherently more efficient than each building having to create its own system; optimal loads ensured via a shared approach
  • Cost-savings – elimination of on-site plants reduces construction costs with no capital investment required for interconnections
  • Ease of operation and maintenance – 24/7 staffing and all ongoing system maintenance provided by Clearway Energy's team of experts
  • Architectural design flexibility – without the need to set aside space for expensive boiler and chiller equipment, building owners are able to increase leasable area, increasing rental income and overall building value. As an added benefit, rooftops are kept free from unsightly mechanical equipment that can negatively impact the life expectancy of roofs and detracts from the aesthetics of quality buildings
  • Environmental protection – rigid emission standards to protect air quality and shield customers from stringent federal and local air pollution regulations connected to on-site boiler and chiller plants

System Profile

Energy Center Pittsburgh will soon be comprised of two systems – the existing North Shore Plant and a second Uptown Plant currently in development.

    • Total capacity: 240 Mlbs/hr steam; 12,580 tons of chilled water
  • Uptown Plant – Located east of downtown/Golden Triangle in emerging Lower Hill district. 1Q 2018 with UPMC Mercy Hospital as the initial anchor customer
